Determination of Aggregate Impact Value: Object: To determining impact value of coarse aggregate Apparatus: The apparatus consist of the

following: a. An impact testing machine of the general form as shown in figure. b. Sieve : I.S. Sieve of sizes 12.5, 10 & 2.36 mm c. Measures: A cylindrical metal measures, tarred to the nearest gram, of sufficient rigidity to retain its form under rough usage & of the following internal diameter. Diameter: 75 mm Depth: 50 mm d. Tamping rod e. Balance f. Oven

Preparation of test sample: Test sample shall consist of aggregate the whole of passing a 12.5 mm I.S sieve & is retained on a 10 mm I.S. sieve. The aggregate comprising the test sample shall be dried in an oven for a period of four hours at a temperature of 100 to 100 degree C & cooled. The measures shall be filled about one third full with the aggregate & tamped with 25 strokes of the rounded end of tamping rod. Further similar quantity of aggregate shall be added & a further tamping of 25 strokes given.

Test Procedure: a. The impact machine shall rest without wedging or packing upon the level plate, block or floor, so that it is rigid & the hammer guide columns are vertical. b. The cup shall be fixed firmly in position on the base of the machine & the whole of the test sample placed in it & compacted by a single tamping of 25 strokes of the tamping rod. c. The test sample shall be subjected to a total of 15 such blows each being delivered at an interval of not less than 1 second. d. The crushed aggregate shall be removed from the cup & the whole of it sieved on the 2.36 mm I.S. sieve until no further significant amount passes in one minutes. The fraction passing the sieve shall be weighed to an accuracy of 0.1 gram. The fraction retained on the sieve shall also be weighed & if the total weight is less then result shall be declared as fresh test made.

Calculations: Aggregate Impact Value = (B/A) X 100 Where B = weight of fraction passing 2.36 mm sieve, A = weight of oven dried sample, AIV = (58/358) X 100 = 16.2 %

Conclusion: Aggregate Impact Value is 16.2 %
