Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines.

Engineers in this discipline work on powerproducing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines and power-using machines such as refrigeration, air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, robots used in manufacturing, space shuttle vehicles, aircraft of all sizes and shapes, automobiles, turbines, pumps, power plants, and factories.

How is math used in mechanical engineering?

Mechanical engineers use math in order to be able to design, develop, make, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. Math is used to represent systems of parts working together. The motion of these parts includes translation, rotation, compression, stretching, vibrating, damping and more. All of these motions can be described by what is called "state equations". These state equations can be used by a computer in a control system like for instance your car. Here is an example, the cruise control on a car keeps the speed of the car the same by passing impulses to such a mathematical system.
