DEMONSTRATION NUMBER-1

POLARISATION OF LIGHT USING TWO POLAROIDS

CERTIFICATE
| Rivina Class XII-C Amity international School Saket, New Delhi

This is to certify that Rivina of Class XII-C, Amity International School, Saket, has completed the demonstration titled POLARISATION OF LIGHT USING TWO POLAROIDS Under my guidance and to my utmost satisfaction, keeping in mind the norms laid by the CBSE Board.

Mr. Siddheshwar Pandey (Physics Teacher)

OBJECTIVE
To observe polarization of light using two polaroids.

APPARATUS
1. Thin glass sheet

2. A light source giving monochromatic light beam with parallel rays 3. Polaroids

THEORY
When an unpolarised light is made incident on a thin glass sheet at an angle of 57.5, the reflected ray and the refracted ray depart from each other at an angle of 90. The reflected ray is completely plane polarized and the refracted ray is partly plane polarized. It can be tested by a Polaroid.

PROCEDURE
1. Take a thin glass sheet in a horizontal plane surface with a hole under the sheet. 2. Take a parallel beam of monochromatic light having parallel rays and make it incident on the upper face of glass sheet.
3. 4.

Adjust the angle of incidence to 57.5. Observe the reflected ray and the reflected rays. They must make an angle of 90 with each other.

TESTING FOR POLARISATION

Take a Polaroid and keep it between incident light and your eyes. Rotate it about axis along the incident ray. No change of intensity will be detected. It is so because the incident light is unpolarized.

Keep the Polaroid in between the refracted ray and your eyes. Rotate the Polaroid, the light intensity will be found to become maximum and minimum with rotation of Polaroid by 90. It is so because the refracted ray is partly plane polarized. Keep the Polaroid between the reflected ray and your eyes. Rotate the Polaroid, the light intensity will be found to be maximum and zero alternatively with rotation by 90. It is

so because the reflected completely plane polarized.

Light polarized by polarizer is passed through the analyser when it is parallel with it. No light passes A and T become crossed.
