ChE 243: Fluid Dynamics Problem Set #1 Due: Tuesday, January 31, 2011 Reading: WWWR Chapter 1 Problem

Solving: Total Points = 145 Possible 1. (10 points) Which of the quantities listed below are flow properties and which are fluid properties? a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j. Compressibility Density Normal stress Pressure Pressure gradient Viscosity Temperature Specific heat Velocity Speed of sound

2. (10 points) A clean glass capillary tube contains water at 40oC. Please calculate how high (in millimeters) the water will rise in the capillary tube if the diameter of the tube is 0.25 cm.

3. (10 points) A scalar field is given by the function: (a) Find at the point (3,5) (b) Find the component of that makes a -60 angle with the axis at the point (3,5)

4. (20 points) At 60 oC the surface tension of water is 0.0662 N/m and the surface tension of mercury is 0.47 N/m. Determine the capillary height changes in these two fluids when they are in contact with air in a glass tube with a diameter of 0.55 mm. Assume that the contact angles for water and mercury are 0o and 130o respectively.

5. (20 points) Determine the diameter of the glass tube necessary to keep the capillary height of water at 40oC less than 1.7 mm.

6. (10 points) Determine the capillary rise for a water-air-glass interface at 40oC in a clean glass tube having a radius of 0.5 mm.

7. (10 points) Determine the difference in pressure between the inside and outside of a soap bubble at 20oC if the diameter of the bubble is 5 mm.

8. (25 points) An experimental fluid is used to create a spherical bubble with a diameter of 0.25 cm. When in contact with a surface made of plastic it has a contact angle of 30 degrees. The pressure inside the bubble is 101453 Pa and outside the bubble the pressure is atmospheric. In a particular experiment, you are asked to calculate how high this experimental fluid will rise in a capillary tube made of the same plastic as used in the surface described above. The diameter of the capillary tube is 0.2 cm. The density of the experimental fluid used in this experiment is 750 kg/m3. 9. (30 points) A vertical cylindrical tank having a base diameter of 3 meters and a height of 5 meters is filled to the top with water at 20 . (a) How much water will overflow if the water is heated to 80 ? (b) How high does the tank need to be at 80 so that no water overflows if we assume the diameter of the tank is the same?
