Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte Born 1898

Born in Lessines, Belgium Eldest of three boys. Paul and Raymond Began painting at the age of 14 Used Oil on Canvas Served in the Military in 1921 Married Georgette in 1922 1915-1925 attended the Fine Arts Academy of Brussels Paul, Raymond, & Magritte 1956-Awarded the Guggenheim Prize for Belgium His friends made up the titles of the Paintings Estimated the Magritte painted around 1,300 pieces.

inspirations for his art: His encounter with an artist in a cemetery as a young child. Jean Metzinger and Fernand Leger influenced much of Magritte's early artwork.

Rene Magritte's mother s suicide in 1912 was also a inspiration on his paintings.

Magritte started out as a Futurism and Cubism artist. He made two attempts to change his art style and eventually became a Surrealist in 1925 after he saw Giorgio de Chirico s work.

Magritte's mother committed suicide by drowning herself in a river. Rene was there when they found her body. Her nightgown was wrapped around her face, which influences these paintings.

I chose Rene Magritte as my artist because I love the way all of his paintings are strange. Their mysterious and secretive meaning behind each piece gives you a chance to come up with your own imaginative story.

Died in 1967 of Pancreatic Cancer
