Teach, Model, Practice, Praise

Teach
The routine or rule just like you teach academics

Model
Show them what the routine or rule should look and sound like
Show it the right way Show the wrong way (teacher do this not a student)

Practice
Have them do it Play the Good behavior Game and PRACTICE the skill

Praise
Catch and praise students when they are following rules or complete the routine correctly

The ABCs of Misbehavior Antecedent

What happens before the problem behavior?

Behavior
What does the problem behavior look like?

Consequence
What happens after the problem behavior?

Step 1: Describe the Behavior

What does the problem behavior look like? How often does the problem behavior occur? How long does the problem behavior last when it does occur? How disruptive or dangerous is the problem behavior?

Step 2: Describe the Antecedents

Where, when and with whom are problem behaviors most likely? What kind of things make the problem more likely?
difficult tasks Transitions large group settings teachers request particular individuals

When and where is the problem most likely to happen? (days of week, specific classes, hallways, bathrooms) When is the problem behavior least likely to occur? (days of week, specific classes, hallways, bathrooms)

Setting Events:
Is there anything that happens before or after school or in-between classes that make it more likely that youll have a problem?
missed medication history of academic failure conflict at home missed meals lack of sleep history or problems with peers

Step 3:Description of the Consequence

What usually happens after the problem occurs?
What is the your reaction? How do other students react? Is the student sent to the office? Does the student get out of doing work? Does the student get in a power struggle?

Functions of Behavior
All behaviors have a purpose.
Students misbehave because they need something:
Attention from teacher or peers Want something they dont have Avoiding/Escaping something they dont like

Use the ABC information to determine the most likely function/ purpose of the misbehavior.

Simple Example
Antecedent
Teacher asks students an academic question.

Behavior
Louis yells out the answer without raising his hand during small and large group instruction.

Consequence
Teacher praises Louis for correct answer. Teacher tells Louis to give other students a chance.

What might be the function?

Teacher Attention? Peer Attention? Escape/ Avoid something he doesnt like? Get something he wants/tangible?

Louis wants attention from the teacher.

Devise a plan based on hypothesized function:

Behavior Teaching Strategies Take Louis Precorrect: remember to aside and teach raise your hand him to raise his before answering hand (teach, Antecedent Strategies
model, practice, praise)

Consequence Strategies Ignore Louis when he calls out. Praise and call on Louis when he raises his hand.

Louiss Plan
Desired Behavior
Louis will raise hand without calling out the answer and wait for the teacher to call on him.

Consequence
Teacher will provide praise when Louis raises his hand and does not call out.

Setting Event
No known setting event

Antecedent
Teacher asks a question

Problem Behavior
Louis calls out the answer

Consequence
Teacher either gives praise or reprimands Louis

Function
Teacher attention

Alternative Behavior
Louis will raise his hand before answering the question

Activity
Identify Case Examples from Classrooms Work together to identify the ABCs Identify the probable function. Work together to think of strategies to prevent the behavior over time.
