Colourless liquid Odour Volatile Solubility in water Boiling point is 78oC
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
(I) COMBUSTION
Ethanol is very flammable Burns easily in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water Chemical equation :
C2H5OH(l) + 3O2(g)
2CO2(g) + 3H2O(l)
4
(II) OXIDATION
Ethanol is oxidized to ethanoic acid Oxidizing agent : acidified potassium dichromate (VI) solution Observation : orange to green colour Chemical equation : C2H5OH + 2[O] CH3COOH Other oxidizing agent????
