CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

(I) COMBUSTION
 Ethanol is very flammable  Burns easily in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water  Chemical equation :

C2H5OH(l) + 3O2(g)

(II) OXIDATION
 Ethanol is oxidized to ethanoic acid  Oxidizing agent : acidified potassium dichromate (VI) solution  Observation : orange to green colour  Chemical equation : C2H5OH + 2[O] CH3COOH Other oxidizing agent????

(III) DEHYDRATION
 Water is removed from ethanol  Ethanol is dehydrated by heating at 180oC with concentrated sulphuric acid.  Chemical equation H2SO4 C2H4 + H2O C2H5OH 180oC Alternative catalysts: Unglazed porcelain chips / Conc. Phosphoric acid/ Porous pot/ Pumice stone / Aluminium oxide
