EE 120 Miniproject Guidelines

Requirement: 555 IC wired as (a) monostable/one-shot and (b) astable/freerunning multivibrator. Guidelines: Here is the pin diagram for a 555 IC. Search the net to verify.

Monostable must be adjustable; use a potentiometer to vary resistance value. Use output devices such as LEDs or buzzers/bleepers to indicate end of timing. Sample circuit (feel free to use other schematics if youre not comfortable with this one). One of the LEDs is lighted upon initial switch-on, then bleeper and red led activate after the timer. In this circuit a 5V source may actually be used. Upon checking, digital trainer is allowed for supplying Vcc and GND.

 For astable, each complete pulse must be as close as possible to 1 second total. Ideally it spends 0.5 s positive level and 0.5 negative level, such that either PGT or NGT operation takes 1 s between triggers. Here are two random circuits on the internet. The circuit you should use is NOT limited to these two. You may search the internet for other circuits other than these (but most likely youll find variations of these).

Include in your documentation the formula for the duration of the pulses. Similar to the monostable, include a means of showing the output. For testing, you may want to first test it on the digital trainer L1-L4, but upon submission, use an external output device such as a LED. Pass a short paper regarding this miniproject. Include the schematic you used, picture of the actual circuits to be submitted (breadboard, no need to PCB, but PCB submissions will earn bonus points), and a parts list. You must purchase all the parts of this project. Do not take ICs from the lab! Deadline is on February 29, Wednesday, 10AM. Presentations will be done during the first 30 minutes of class to your respective lab instructors. Post on the EE groups any other questions regarding requirements. However, do not expect every query to be answered, especially if its something you can easily search off the net or reference materials.
