Integration into NLMUSD Curriculum Maps (If applicable in Language arts or Math) Unit 2 Using the Features of Expository Text to Locate and Interpret Information

Students will understand (lesson/unit objectives): Students will understand that it is important to use text features to help them understand and read non-fiction text.

Essential Questions to guide this unit/lesson and focus teaching and learning: What text features are in the book you are reading? How does the specific text feature help you understand what you are reading? Technology & Web 2.0 resources needed (hardware and software, websites) Computer and Smart Board to look at text features and iPad to record students talking about text features. Procedure (learning activities)/ lessons of unit 1. Students will look through selected non-fiction and find text features to discuss.

2. Students will match the text feature to the ones on the board 3. Students will discuss how to use the table of contents and glossary.

4. Students will use what they know about text features during a guided reading lesson

5. Students will decide on the text feature they want to talk about. 6. Students will be recorded talking about their text feature.

Assessment Method Teacher observation during guided reading. Notes: (this area may list accommodations, differentiation, as well as other key information that may not fit into the categories above)
