PROPOGATION OF WAVES IN ELASTIC SOLID MEDIA Any elastic body is at rest, when we apply a constant load on it.

In an elastic solid media there is more than one kind of wave & more than one characteristic of wave velocity. Plane waves Consider an elastic medium ,if disturbance is created at a point in an elastic medium, then from this point waves radiate in all direction. At a large distance from this center of disturbance waves are transmitted. These waves are called as plane waves. There are two type of plane waves 1)Longitudinal wave 2)Transverse wave Longitudinal wave A particle that are moving parallel to the direction of wave propagation is called as longitudinal wave. if we take the x-axis in the directions of wave propagations then v=0,w=0 & u is the only function of x only.,D^2 u / Dt^2 =C1^2 D^2U /DX^2 Transverse waveWe can show the features of a transverse wave in the diagram below: We can see the features of a longitudinal wave in the diagram below.

Waves of dilatation & waves of distortion differential equations in terms of displacement. The equation of motion are ( + G )de /dx + G u d^2u /dt^2 = 0 Similarly we write the equation for y & z also Where e = volume of expansion Delta^2 =d^2 /dx^2 +d^2 /dy^2 +d^2 /dz^2 Wave produced the deformation in such a way so that volume of expansion is zero ( + G ) d(0) / dx =0 Deformation consisting of shearing distortion & rotation G u d^2u /dt^2 =0 Similarly we write the equation for v & w These equation are called as a waves of distortion
