MGMT 7135: Homework #1 1a: Ten norms in MGMT 7135 Respectfulness Politeness Willingness to help Use of appropriate language Established sitting positions Friendliness Team spirit Punctuality Sharing Trust

James Ekwensi

1b: In my country, the classes are a lot larger and it is almost impossible to establish such camaraderie, friendship and trust with so many people. Cliques usually spring up in class and compete with each other. Another unique observation is that students are not usually allowed to eat anything while the class is on and you are required to always stand up when you are asking or answering questions. 2. I learned these norms by: Observing behaviors of class members towards me and others Asking specific questions about expectations Prior experience in previous grad school class Working together in teams Class lunches and dinners Class orientation at the beginning of the program Reading a book on behavioral expectations

3. 5 pivotal norms at my last place of work: People are encouraged to ask questions and share concerns Social potlucks at least once a month Punctuality Friendliness Diligence to duty

4. The socialization techniques include: Van Maanen and Schein model (1979) Collective versus Individual socialization (A - collective) Formal vs. Informal socialization (A formal) Sequential vs. Random socialization (B) Fixed vs. Variable socialization (B)

MGMT 7135: Homework #1 Serial vs. Disjunctive socialization (B) Investiture vs. Divestiture socialization (B)
