An Analysis of V s speech in the Movie V for Vendetta:

Is it a persuasive speech or a piece of propaganda that V is trying to present in his speech? V s ideology is to bring down current British government. V is trying to persuade the Londoners to believe in what he considered as the right thing to do which is destroying the parliament building. His aim might not be to create propaganda but merely just to bring hope to this inhibit country. However, which one of these techniques is portrayed in his speech more? As to shed some light in this debatable matter, I shall attempt to distinguish whether this influential speech is propaganda or just a harmless persuasive speech. V s speech began with an idea of inclusivity and it is constantly appeared though out the entire speech. This enables the citizens to relate to him easily as he established that he is just like any other commoner with the use of the word bloke . Furthermore, the cunningly used of a parallelism in the sentence where he repeatedly used the word you and I enhanced the idea of inclusivity even more. Not only that, he forms a barrier between the government and the citizen by pinpointing and blaming the High Chancellor. V highlighted Sulter s idea of peace which results to lack of privacy and censorship in the country. This technique of demonizing the enemy makes V to appear as a saviour to the problems as well as inferior than Adam Sulter. This shows that undeniably that a propaganda technique was used in his speech. Freedom versus suppression refers to the one of the hidden messages that V wants the Londoners to realize. He slowly evokes their emotion using pathos in certain parts of his speech. The cleverly inserted choice of diction such cruelty , oppression and injustice will provoke a negative respond from the citizens of London towards the authorities. Enriched with the powerful effect of a tricolon, V is able to remind everyone that fairness, justice, and freedom are not just a word but they are perspectives. Besides that, the ingenious act of using hypophora allows V to give his point of view on the subject at hand. However, he used hypophora to admonish the decision that the citizens chose in the mist of the chaos. This contradicts the idea that this speech is propaganda because V bluntly blaming the citizen instead. However, he had an alternative motive when he used this technique. This method enables him to evoke a sense of guilty and regret in the heart of the citizens. Then, he showed his understanding of their previous actions and provides a feeling of acceptance as well as generated an ownership of the problem. This unconsciously makes the Londoners supports his ideology. Overall, this analysis leads me to a conclusion that the speech that V broadcasted throughout the entire London was just to introduce his plan not propaganda. At first glance, the speech does have the outer appearance of propaganda because of the visible use of the pinpointing technique. V used some propaganda techniques just to strengthen the contents of his speech. Therefore, the speech that V delivered was a persuasive speech indeed.
