Summary of the Myth of Medea

Being a myth, there are many different interpretations of the story of Medea, because it has been passed down my word of mouth for thousands of year. This summary of Medea has been gathered from many different interpretations of the story and been made into one. Jason has been faced with a problem, his inheritance is not going to be passed down, and instead he must earn the inheritance to his father kingdom, by obtaining the golden fleece. To do so he must journey to the land of Colchis, home of Medea, a barbarian witch, and also princess of the city. When Medea first encounters Jason, she falls in love, and offers to help him find the fleece, with his hand in marriage in return. Jason agrees to Medeas proposition and they are successful on their mission. When the two return to Jasons hometown, where the Golden Fleece is no longer magical, Medea is feared and lives a life of exile. During this time, Medea is abandoned by Jason, and learns that he has betrayed her to marry King Creons daughter. Filled with rage and jealousy, Medea plans to kill Jasons new wife and father in law, King Creon. Medea sends them both poisonous gifts, and successfully causes them to die. Medea is overjoyed with the news of the death of her

husbands loved ones, but will be satisfied only after she has killed her own children, to successfully get revenge on Jason. Medea does just as she had planned, and kills her own two sons by sword. Before Jason can come see what Medea has done, she flees on a serpent drawn chariot, into the sky, and takes her childrens corpses with her, as she does not want to allow Jason to give them a proper burial. Jason curses Medea as she races away, and Medea curses Back at Jason from the sky.
