SALT LAKE CITY LIBRARY

Utah

The plaza for this new central library was intended to become a focus for public urban gathering downtown. It is designed to accommodate large crowds but also provides intimate spaces for visitors. Three water features identify different experiences in the plaza, including a reecting pool by the Library, a waterwall in the Childrens Garden and a granite water sculpture that allows playful wading at one end and offers the white noise of a torrential cascade at the other. The sunken wedge garden provides visual reprieve and shade shelter from the large granite plaza, while a promontory-like rooftop garden displays native plants and gives dramatic views to the Wasatch Mountains.
