ABSTRACT: As one of the basic units of language, word is the carrier of idea. There
exist a great number of polysemies in English vocabulary. These polysemies make
word learning more complicated. As one of the important ways of learning the world
and thinking, metaphor is closely related to vocabulary. This paper makes tentative
study on polysemies learning and teaching with the cognitive linguistic theory of
metaphor. It suggests that teachers should help students to learn words by introducing
metaphor theory so as to achieve a better effect on word learning.
