Invertebrates Review Lab


Purpose: Classify animals into their correct phyla by looking at the characteristics present. Background: In this lab, you will be looking at different preserved animals called specimens. These animals were all once living. Please use caution while handling the jars, as some are made of glass and can break. Pre-Lab: Fill in the boxes below with 2 or 3 characteristics for each phylum. The scientific name of each phylum is in (italics).

Procedure: 1. Look at the Observations and Data table. Draw or explain what each characteristic means. 2. Observe each numbered specimen. Check off the characteristic(s) present in the specimen on the table. Be sure to mark in the CORRECTLY numbered column match the number on the jar to the number on the table. 3. Repeat until all specimens have been observed. 4. Based on the characteristics you observed, determine which phylum the specimen belongs in. 5. Complete the Conclusions section of this lab.
