In the passage below, many of the verbs have been removed.

In each blank space, write the correct form of the verb whose base form is written in bracket. In Denmark long ago, there (live) a poor boy. His father (die) and his mother (marry) again. But the boy (not like) his new father. When he was fourteen, the boy (go) to (ask) a favor of the Prince of Denmark. He (tell) the Prince. I (want) to (write) plays and (act) at the Royal Theater. The Prince (give) him some sensible advice: Learn a useful trade, like shoemaking. The boy, however, (not follow) the advice. His father (be) a shoemaker and he had always (be) unhappy. The boy (go) home, (gather) his things, (say) good-bye to his mother and her new husband, and (start) out to (seek) his fortune. He (go) to Copenhagen and (try) to (find) a job in the theatre. But nobody (want) to (hire) a boy with big hands, big feet, and a big nose. Then one day a teacher of music (hear) the boy (sing) and noticed his beautiful, (high), clear voice.

This music teacher (collect) money and (give) it to the boy so that he could (buy) food and clothing while he (study) singing. That (make) the boy happy, but soon his boys voice (change) to that of a mans. His (beautify), high voice had (disappear) forever. By this time, however, he had (make) friends who (admire) his genius. They (give) him money for food and clothes. But he (use) it to (buy) books. He later (enter) a school for writers. The (boy) writing was not very good, but his teacher (not send) him away. He was so good at (tell) stories to children that he could (keep) the teachers children quiet for hours by (tell) them fairy tales. They have (translate) into many languages, but they (be) first told in Danish, by a young man named Hans Christian Andersen.
