OSI Layers

Introduction
OSI Layers (Open System Interconnection Layers) The OSI model is a layered framework for the design of network systems that allows communication between all types of computer systems. It includes multiple protocols and can span over multiple layers of the OSI model.

OSI System
Physical Layer Data Linker Layer

Network Layer
Transport Layer Session Layer

Presentation Layer
Application Layer

Physical Layer
Responsible for converting data signals into electrical

signals
Physical connecter cables that link computer and

network devices
The basic purpose of a physical layer is to create

electrical, optical or microwave signal

Data Link Layer

Makes physical layer appear error free to the upper

layer
Divides the data received to manageable data units In this layer the appropriate physical protocol is

assigned to the data

Network Layer
Responsible for source to destination delivery

Data link layer oversees the delivery of the packet

between two systems on the same network

Dynamic Host Control Protocol is responsible for

providing each computer on the network an IP address

Transport Layer
Responsible for process to process delivery of the

entire message functions Its functions are: Uniquely identifying different applications Segmentation and re assembly of data Flow control Manages data loops

Session Layer
Responsible for opening and closing sessions of

application process
Establishes, maintains and ends communication with

the receiving device

Synchronizes the interaction between communication

systems

Presentation Layer
Responsible for translating data received in different

layers
Responsible for presenting data in a format

recognizable by the user

Application Layer
Enables the user to access the network

Interacts with operating system

Helpful for transferring files, reading messages or

performing other network relate activities for user

Conclusion
OSI layers play an communication process important role in data

These are the prescription for characterizing and standardizing the functions of a communication system
