Name of Lesson: Bill of Rights

Grade Level: 9 Subject: US History Prepared by: Chris Cobbina Overview and Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn about the Bill of Rights, determine which rights they feel are important, and analyze how they affect their daily life. Educational Standards 6-12.USH1.4.1.2 Identify fundamental values and principles as expressed in basic documents such as the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the United States Constitution. Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: (Comprehension Level) identify key vocabulary in the Bill of Rights (Analysis Level) analyze a list of potential rights citizens should have (Analysis Level) analyze the impact of the Bill of Rights on daily life. Materials Needed: participation guide (25) student worksheets (25) Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) Website: http://www.icivics.org/games/do-i-have-right Copy of Bill of Rights Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

1. Hand each student a packet of the participation guide and student worksheets 2. As a class, read the first paragraph of the Rights in the participation guide to
introduce the students to the activity. Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. Poll the students to determine which rights they feel are important and explain why
they feel so. Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson 1. Read the Bill of Rights, discussing as a class. Review the vocabulary words that are bolded in the participation guide found in the Bill of Rights. 2. After reading, have students pair up to discuss which Right goes with which amendment. Then identify which were not represented in the Bill of rights. 3. Have students complete worksheets 1-2.

4. After students have finished, have them go to the following website on the computer: http://www.icivics.org/games/do-i-have-right at the website they will complete a game on the Bill of Rights that will be used as a check for understanding. Notes
