1.0

URPOSE The purpose of this procedure is to define procedure and method to be used and to have written instructions for carrying out positive material identification at construction, to check the content of alloying elements present in various components and weld joints which are examined and thus to ensure usage of correct metallurgy as specified in approved Specification / Drawing / WPS.

SCOPE This procedure in general applies to the stainless steel and alloy steel item used in the job as per specification.

DEFINITIONS POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIIFICATION (PMI) The term Positive Material Identification (PMI) refers to determination / verification of alloy type or its composition using portable alloy analyzer.

TERMS For the purpose of this document, the term Shall indicates a mandatory requirement and Should indicates a recommended practice.

METHODOLOGY PMI at site shall be carried out with the help of X- Ray base self calibrated alloy analyzer / or equivalent. Calibration shall be done at site with the help of standard piece supplied with the analyzer. The surface of the component subjected to PMI shall be reasonably clean. All stainless steel and alloy steel material and weld joint as detailed in the scope of this procedure shall be subjected to PMI, before leak test clearance of line / Piping system. If the component fails to comply with the requirement of characteristic alloying element as specified in relevant code / specification, it shall be stored separately with rejection mark properly stamped / marked on it, until final disposition.
