The first stage was derived from the space shuttle solid rocket boosters and used a new forward adapter and avionics upgrades. The upper stage was powered by a J-2X engine and had a 18-ft diameter aluminum-lithium structure. At liftoff, the entire Ares I stack had a gross mass of 2,044.0K lbm and was 325.0 ft in length.
