Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS)

What?
Intensive Residential Treatment Services are mental health services that are provided in a residential setting for a limited amount of time. These services are required to be directed towards specific goals, such as psychiatric stabilization, and must accomplish those goals by a particular date. IRTS also helps individuals become more self sufficient and develop community living skills so they are able to live more independently after receiving IRTS.

Who?
To receive IRTS, an individual must be 18 years or older, be eligible for Medical Assistance, and meet the admission criteria for IRTS. Private medical insurance may pay for IRTS, but it depends on the coverage of the specific plan. For more information on the admission criteria, visit the MN Department of Human Services website.

My 32 year old son was recently hospitalized due to a mental health breakdown. He has co-occurring Bi-Polar Disorder and ARND. The IRTS process resulted in getting him stabilized and ready to return to his group home. Hes glad to be back home. -Christina, parent

How?
To receive IRTS, a mental health professional needs to determine that an individual needs more intensive care than is already available. Your county case manager is the best person to ask about this option.
