Tam is a 20-year-old male Sumatran rhino which is rescued from an oil palm plantation in August 2008. The rescue of 12-year-old Puntung last December now gives fresh hope for the species its possible now that the Sumatran rhino maybe saved from the brink of extinction.Both the rhinos are members of Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, the smallest species of rhinoceros on the planet and the last remnant of an evolutionary line of hairy rhinos which started to avolve some 20 million years ago. This endangered spesies are mostly hunted by poachers for their horns, which are prized as Chinese traditisional medicine.So the best way to stop them from extinct is by rescueing them and breeding them in a well-maintained sanctuary. The numbers of the rhinos are so low and their forest habitat is so dense that it is not possible to get a reliable estimate of exactly hw many maintain. So the best way is through breeding in this short period time to prevent from continues extinction.
