Lesson Plan

Name: Introduction and Interests in WWI Class/Subject: 8th Grade Social Studies Date: March-13-2012 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: 1. Students will understand the causes of World War I 2. Students will understand the effects and outcomes of World War I Content Standards: 16.B.3d (US) Describe ways in which the United States developed as a world political power. 16.A.4a Analyze and report historical events to determine cause-and-effect relationships. Materials/Resources/Technology: -Dry Erase Board/ Markers -Projector -PowerPoint -Handout Procedure: Time 800-Start of Class: Students will take their seats and instructors will begin the 810 class with current events. This will be projected in the front of the class and will include local, state, national, and international levels of news articles. Students will write down reflections to articles in their log books. 812-Introduction of Lesson: Instructors will pass out handout and ask students what they know 820 about World War One. Instructors will write down key vocabulary words that students say. Instructors will then begin lesson of World War I by presenting the causes. 821-Lesson Instruction: Using the PowerPoint, instructors will present the 840 causes for WWI. Students will be interacting with the PowerPoint by filling in the blank spaces on their handout. After the causes of the War are discussed, instructors will present how the war escalated into a world war. The presentation will include descriptions of actual World War One warfare along with images. These will focus on important war terms like trench warfare, No Mans Land, Mustard Gas, Shell-Shock, Axis, and Allied. Finally instructors will present the outcomes of WWI. This will include maps

of Battles and the countries effected by the outcomes of WWI.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Students will be asked to write a short letter home to their parents, pretending that they are an American soldier on the front lines of WWI.They will include name, date and details about the Lives of soldiers in WWI. Students will be asked to include three of the vocabulary terms in their letters home. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Instructors will ask students if they have any other questions about WWI.
