LOCOMOTION AND
REPRODUCTION OF PROTOZOAS

INTRODUCTION
Protozoas are animal-like structures 4 phylum in protozoas which are classified on the way they moved. Reproduce by binary fission and conjugation Ingest their food by phagocytosis. Others use pseudopodia to move and to engulf prey.

4 phylum
1. Zooflagellates e.g. Trypanosoma gambiense (sleeping sickness) 2. Sarcodina e.g. Amoeba 3. Ciliophora e.g. Paramecium 4. Sporozoa e.g. Plasmodium vivax

zooflagellates
Move with a whip-like extension called flagella The flagella is a long fibril that is spirally wound around and beats or rotates in the water to move the protozoa about Some band together in colonies and beat their flagella in unison to move the colony through the water

Reproduction of Trypanosoma gambiense

sarcodina
They flow their protoplasm forward into a foot then bringing the rest of their body into the foot and they can slither along Some have firm axial rods instead of pseudopods which they moves by the motion of these rods

Reproduction of Amoeba

ciliophora
Have hundreds of tiny cilia which beat in unison to propel the protist through the water Cilia are fused together in rows or tuffs(called cirri) and are used for special function such as food gathering

Reproduction of Paramecium

sporozoa
Are parasites that live in another organism They lack cilia and flagella meaning they dont move They generally obtain nutrients by absorbing molecules from the host organism
