IS ECO-FRIENDLY AFFORDABLE?

Despite all the technological advancements made to control environmental degradation caused by human activities, not enough awareness regarding eco-friendly technologies has been spread in Pakistan which is needed to bring about a positive change. The lack of awareness is evident in developing countries like Pakistan where the environment is exploited on daily basis in order to save couple of bucks. Let us take the example of catalytic converters which convert harmful exhaust gases into CO2 and water. These were introduced globally during the 1950s but car manufacturers in Pakistan have still not adopted its use as the local people cannot afford it. Plus the platinum in the converters attract more thieves than the environmental advisors! The aristocrats and mill owners are accustomed to taking the easier way out or the one which does not burden their pockets and eventually decide to ignore the environmental wellbeing. Most mills and factories in Pakistan are emitting huge amounts of greenhouse gases and are dumping tons of toxic chemicals into the Arabian Sea without treating it. According to Economic Survey of Pakistan 2008-09: Economic loses due to industrial effluents and water pollution in the country is estimated to be Rs 109.5 billion per year. It is commonly observed that industries in Pakistan have a neglectful attitude towards installing towers and chimneys, electrostatic air filters and sewage purifiers. This way the production costs may be minimized but environmental damage is certainly maximized. The use of plastic is discouraged all over the world as it is non-biodegradable and is responsible for causing plastic pollution in the oceans. But yet it finds its greatest markets in the third world nations where people still prefer plastic bags and utensils instead of glassware. To save our environment from further degradation and to encourage green culture in our society, we must all make a conscious effort to conserve natural resources. It will also go a long way if environmental laws are implemented in the country and the use of eco-friendly and sustainable technologies are encouraged.
