APPLICATIONS OF EQUATIONS
Letting the unknown number be n, write of the
following as an equation, and then find the value of
the number.
1. (a) What do I add 5 to give 7?
(b) From what number do I subtract 23 to give 12?
(c) I think of a number and subtract 5. If the result is -2,
what is the number?
(d) If I double a number and add 5, the result is 11. What
is the number?
(e) A number is three times another. If their sum is 20,
find the numbers.
2. A girl is x years old. Her father is three times as old. If the difference
in their ages is 30 years,
a. form an equation in x,
b. solve the equation to find the girl’s age
3. A boy is 12 years old. His mother is 4 times as old. In x years’ time,
the mother will be three times as old as the son. Form an equation
in x and hence find x.
4. The sum of two consecutive odd number is 66. Let n be the smaller
number.
a. Express the bigger number in terms of n.
b. Form an equation in n.
c. Hence find the two numbers.
5. The cost of 3 kg of mangos teens and 4 kg of durians is
Rp290.000,00. Then the cost of 1 kg of mangos teens is
Rp20.000,00 less than the cost of durian.
