Poetry in Music

Task: Many times, songs that you hear on the radio today can be considered a type of lyrical poetry. For this assignment, you will be completing a one page analysis of the lyrics of one APPROPRIATE song of your choice as well as finding lyrical connections to multiple poetic terms. Analysis Requirements (50 pts): One page, double-spaced Include singer, name of the song, and year of the songs composition Brief summary of the overall message of the song (2-3 sentences) Analysis of the songs musical production (what do you observe when listening to the song? i.e. what words are emphasized as you listen to this song? Why do you think theses words are emphasized? Where do the breaks/pauses in the song occur? What is the purpose of the pauses? Choose any TWO voice elements (diction, detail, imagery, tone, syntax) and provide ONE QUOTE for each element and 1) explain how its an example of that voice element and 2) explain how this voice element affects the overall meaning of the song Organized in appropriate paragraphs ________________________________________________________________

Poetic Terms (50 pts)


Task: With the help of your poetic terms sheet, you must find FIVE DIFFERENT examples of these terms in musical lyrics. You must provide the quoted lyrics (including the song and artist next to the quote) a brief explanation of how this is an example of that poetic term. These terms do not have to be found in one song. You may quote lyrics from as many songs as needed in order to find your five terms.
