It is located 160km south of Chennai and 7 km north of Pondicherry. It was designed by Frenchborn architect ROGER ANGER who visualized it as a symbol of a new consciousness

erupting from the earth, for the benefit of mankind. The main motive of the establishment of Auroville is to give emphasis on environmentalism and to exercise in sustainable living. For this it uses local materials like COMPRESSED EARTH BLOCKS and ferrocement as building construction material which are environment friendly unlike materials like cement, concrete. They are cheap and resistant to weathering comparatively. Various houses and buildings have been built using this materials likeFABIAN OSTNERS

HOUSE, AUROVILLE VISITORS CENTRE, ROGER ANGERS HOUSE e.t.c. Besides this, Auroville has always remained a research field for variety of architectural forms and this is exemplified in various buildings likeSOLAR KITCHEN and MOVEABLE HOUSES. This solar kitchen is the largest in the world now and the main feature of this moveable house is that it can be dismantled, without loss of materials and can be rebuilt elsewhere. The township boundary is in the form of circle 2.5km radius.

MATRIMANDIR is the soul of the city. It symbolizes radiating golden supramental sun. It is very hard to miss INNER CHAMBER

this huge, slightly flattened 36m* 29m golden sphere with 12 sloping structures around it. Almost like a dream, walls are cladded in white marble, white carpet on the floor. The

magic doesnt end here because of the presence of glass sphere in the centre in which a beam of concentrated sunlight falls from the roof. This I say is a space you must experience.
