Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of March 26, 2012

This week we will be tying up loose end from the weather unit and Unit beginning our new unit, Water, Water Everywhere. The central idea is that water is essential to life, and is a limited resource for many people. It includes inquiries into: Sources of water and how water is used What happens to water after we have used it Distribution and availability of usable water Responsibilities regarding water We will be visiting kowerk in late April to see the water museum and learn more about how water gets to us in Berlin. Unit Some key vocabulary we will use in the unit: salty, fresh, resource, source, filtration, conservation, glacier, lake, river, sea, ocean, stream, groundwater, run-off, sewage, essential, and limited. We will also review the water cycle words (condensation, evaporation, precipitation). It will help your child if you discuss these words in your home language. If you translate these words, we would love to have a copy for classroom use. Our reading and writing this week will focus on our new unit. We will be exploring a few websites about water, reading and writing about water, and adding to our poetry anthologies. Due to student led conferences and the field trip, the 3rd grade will not be having word work this week. We would like for students to continue reading and making connections at home (text to text and text to world), as well as reflecting on their conference after Tuesday. This week we will be concentrating on larger numbers in addition and subtraction. We are using money to talk about decimals to the tenths (but hundredths naturally come up). Remember 3A and 3B have their weather field trip Friday. Please help your child to pack healthy snacks and lunch. If you are sending money for lunch, please know what s/he is buying. March 27 ES SLC- we look forward to seeing you tomorrow! Friday, March 31- ES Student Council Spirit Day- Mixed-Up Day- you can dress in any kind of mixed up way Check the lost and found tables tomorrow!!!
