Systems of Equations: Day 2

Name:________________________

Warm Up A company called E-MUSIC charges you $5 to join their site, and $0.50 for every song you download from their site. Their competitors, a company called U-TUNES, doesnt make you pay to join their site but charges $1 for every song that you download. 1. If you dont download many songs, which company is cheaper for you? 2. When is it cheaper to join E-MUSIC than U-TUNES?

3. Where do the lines y = x + 3 and y = 2 x + 18 cross?

Important Stuff 1. Find four points that satisfy the equation e.g. (0, 10)

x + y = 10 .

2. Find four points that satisfy the equation x y = 6 .

3. The point (0,10) is in the solution set of x + y = 10 . Does it also satisfy the second
equation?

4. How many points do the two equations share ? What are the points that they share?

5. Find a point that is in the solution set of both of x + y = 5 and 2 x + y = 5 .

Systems of Equations: Day 2

Name:________________________

Heres an important definition : A bunch of equations are called a system of equations. For example,

y = 0.5 x + 1 and

y = 0.6 x + 0.6 are a system of equations.

A solution to a system of equations is a point that makes both equations true. For example, the point (0,1) is not a solution to the system of equations because it only makes one of the equations true.

6. Is the given point a solution to the system of equations?

7. Design a system of equations that does not have any solutions.

8. Solve the system of equations in the questions below:
