optional course) Course: Indian Linguistic Thought 3 Credits. Two theory classes and one practical class (2 + 1 hours per week). I. COURSE DESCRIPTION The present course Indian Linguistic Thought (SK201) is an introduction to the Indian linguistic tradition. In this course students will learn about different dimensions of linguistic study spread across various genres of Sanskrit literature - Vedas, Vedgas, various Vykaraa schools, Koas and linguistic discussions in the Daranas and Alakra astra.

II. COURSE CONTENTS Unit-I: Veda & Vedga a) Vedas: Division, different recessions, different styles of recitations b) Origin and nature of language in the Vedas c) Prtikhyas and Vedgas Unit-II: Vykaraa (Padastra) and Koa a) Pninis Astdhyyi and Pninian school of grammar b) Other schools of Sanskrit grammar c) Influence of Sanskrit grammars on other Indian language grammars d) Sanskrit lexicography and Amarakoa. Unit-III: Darana & Alakra astra a) abda in Daranas (Vkyastra & Pramastra) b) abda & Artha in Daranas III. RECOMMENDED READINGS 1.
