It can be argued that the destination is the most important element of the tourism system, motivating visitation, delivering visitor experiences and contributing to enduring memories of the tourism experiences. Yet, the increased growth of demand for tourism, coupled to the changing nature of the tourism consumer, means that destinations are under pressure to be both competitive and sustainable. Using Butlers (1980) Tourism Life Cycle Model and applying it to a city in Malaysia, explain its development in terms of its challenges and implications. (50 marks)

According to Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia, Malaysia has lower shopping spend per visitor, which is only 28 per cent of a tourists spending, compared to 35 per cent and 57 per cent in Singapore and Hong Kong respectively. Explain what is currently being done by the authority in order to improve the attractiveness of Malaysia as a shopping destination. As a consultant to the authority, suggest other viable strategy that can be undertaken to further enhance the attractiveness of Malaysia as a shopping destination. (50 marks) (100 marks)
