CHILE CELEBRATES FIRST OLYMPIC GOLDS NICOLAS MASSU became the first tennis player since 1924 to win

the gold medal in both singles and doubles, and he and countryman FERNANDO GONZALEZ became national heroes in Chile after they won the nations first-ever Olympic gold medals. Gonzalez out-lasted American TAYLOR DENT to win the bronze medal the first medal for Chile in 2004 - winning the third set 16-14 on Saturday. A few hours later, Gonzalez and Massu teamed up to win Chiles first-ever gold by beating Germanys NICOLAS KIEFER and RAINER SCHUETTLER in a five-set match that lasted well over three hours and finally ended around 2:30 a.m. Massu came back on Sunday afternoon and in five sets over four hours he downed American MARDY FISH to claim the singles gold. After the doubles gold medal was won, the streets of Chile came alive with people honking car horns and celebrating, and the party grew on Sunday with Massus singles win. Both players went straight from Athens to New York for the US Open, but Chiles President Ricardo Lagos Escobar, who congratulated the players in a speech over the weekend, has promised a reception at the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago upon their return to the country after the US Open. ATP FOUNDATION CUP RAISES $62,500 FOR HALL OF FAME The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced that $62,500 was raised for Hall by the inaugural ATP Foundation Cup presented by Mercedes-Benz.
