SaskParty Government Passes First Balanced Budget in Canada This Year

The provincial legislature today voted to pass the 2012-13 Saskatchewan Party government budget - the only balanced provincial budget in Canada so far this year. Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick all have one thing in common deficit budgets with unsustainable spending. Over the last few years, Saskatchewan people have worked hard to get our province into the enviable position we are in today, and it was our job, as legislators, to protect the advantage you have created, said MLA XXXX. Last fall, the NDP were bent on taking Saskatchewan down the same path they wanted to go on a wild spending spree that would have driven our province back into have-not status. While other provinces post deficits and try to spend their way out of debt, our government is taking action that ensures we keep the Saskatchewan Advantage. The 2012-13 Keeping the Saskatchewan Advantage budget limits overall government spending increases to less than 5 per cent and posts a surplus of $15 million in the Summary Financial Statements, which take into account all government spending. The budget also includes sustainable spending measures such as $60 million for the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative to further reduce wait times, $551 million for highways, further increases to the Seniors Income Plan, $237.4 million in Municipal Revenue Sharing, $4 million to expand the colorectal cancer screening program province-wide and $113 million to increase benefits and the number of clients served under the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability program. This budget takes action to ensure Saskatchewan people continue to enjoy the highest quality of life in Canada, said MLA XXXX. For the first time in many years, our province is the destination of choice for people to live, to work, to start a business, to get an education, to raise a family and to build a life. Thats the Saskatchewan Advantage. 30 -
