Short Course
CLINICAL INDICATIONS FOR CODERS COURSE (Formerly Medical Science Short Course)
For the purpose of disease and procedural classification, students study the alteration in function of body systems, complications of diseases that affect average length of stay, clinical signs and symptoms of conditions, clinical manifestations and differential diagnosis in the clinical setting. An introduction to pharmacology, drug groups, their uses and their actions is also provided. This course would be ideal for Clinical Coders wishing to increase their knowledge and improve the quality and accuracy of their clinical coding. Students completing the course will receive a certificate of completion. If they apply to complete the Health Information Management Course at Curtin University they will receive credit for completing this course. Students work through a workbook at their own pace, but will need to complete the course by November (most students will complete the course in 6 months).

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Define and describe pharmacological terminology, differentiating between groups of drugs, their use and action. 2. Comprehend the alteration in function of body systems to allow for the accurate classification of disease, outline the potential complications of diseases that would affect average length of stay. 3. Demonstrate the knowledge of clinical manifestations and differential diagnosis in the clinical setting for morbidity statistics. Registration forms can be found at:
