Many psycholinguists believe in a natural mental component that allows toddlers who are exposed to their native language

to slowly develop and be able to recite language if he/ she are exposed to it through a sampling of conversation. Children form their first negatives by adding the word no or not to the beginning of a sentence, and according to Klima and Belligi will use double negatives even when their native language does not use that type of language. The two year old boy I babysit daily has really started to use the word no in the beginning of sentences. I finally made the connection that he had used his language acquisition device, and had developed the word no because he had heard the word in conversation. The two year old does not understand exactly what the word means since he uses No at the beginning of every single sentence. When he first did this I decided to play a trick on him and try and contradict his words by asking him the opposite of what he had just answered No to. For example I would ask him Do you want to go outside and play and his answer would be No, dont want to! So then I decided to ask him the opposite of the question, Do you want to stay inside and play and he again answered No, dont want to! This realization confirmed Chomskys idea that every child is born with a language acquisition device. Chapter 3 page 81.
