McLaughlin FROM: Sam Smith SUBJECT: Job Analysis Packet DATE: 2/9/2012 Underground Coal Engineer, Alpha Natural Resources Job Description As an underground coal engineer the basic understanding and knowledge of the principles found in the coal mining industry is a key to success in this position. The willingness to go underground and work in less than ideal conditions requires a unique type of engineer. Providing engineering advice for certain projects within the mine will require a firsthand look. Ventilation readings and gas seals will be required to be checked periodically in order to test for permissibility; this will fall under my responsibilities. Other responsibilities include the ability to work with local residents, local government, and the federal government on issues such as permitting, mineral rights, and land leases. The knowledge how to construct mine feasibility studies taking into account the life of the mine, pillar set up, ventilation systems, and overall costs will be an essential part of the responsibilities. Audience Analysis Over the summer of 2011 I was given in opportunity to work with Alpha Natural Resources as a Mining Engineer Intern. Through my experiences during the summer I was able to get an idea of how the company works and what they expect out of their employees. Alpha Natural Resources is the third largest coal producer in the United States. They have operations running all along the Appalachian Coal Basin and one large surface mine located in the Powder River Basin. Through the success of investing highly in metallurgical coal the company was able to expand rapidly within a mere ten years. Being such a major world supplier of coal Alpha is dedicated to keep its name untarnished. Safety, responsibility, and following laws are essential to the ideals held by the company; this is reflected by the companies Running Right policy. The company is looking for individuals who are driven and willing to work hard and long hours. The coal industry is all about production and Alpha is the type of company that will expect its employees to get as much coal as possible every year. I can expect the company will have a no nonsense attitude, there is only one way to operate a coal mine and that will be by the Alpha way. Being able to conduct the job in a safe manner while violating no laws is expected and failure to do so will not be tolerated.

Rhetorical Analysis The main point which I decided to bring out in both my cover letter and resume was my experiences in operating coal mines. In the underground coal mining industry it is essential to have experience underground. Already working two summers underground would be something which Alpha would find appealing. I also have made it a point to show that my last internship was with Alpha, this will be very beneficial because most companies go on to hire interns that did a good job. Because the job opening requires a degree in mining engineering I chose to put that first on my resume. Underneath of my education I chose to put down my experiences in underground coal mines, to show I have a basic knowledge of daily operations within a coal mine. I also talk about working on projects underground within my cover letter to show that I am willing to get dirty and apply my knowledge learned in school firsthand. Process Engineer (Consultant), Hatch Job Description Working as a process engineer, the job will focus heavily on projects involving iron ore. The ability to conduct feasibility studies on mining and mineral processing engineering projects will be a large part of the job. As a consultant the job will require the ability to solve problems for many different companies ranging from technical advice, plant layout and design, to maintaining a working relationship with clients to make sure that all of their needs are met. The knowledge of flow sheets used in mineral processing and the skill to then improve upon the designs for companies that you are working with will play a major role in the job. Audience Analysis Hatch is a world leader in technological, engineering, and strategic services using an array of scientific disciplines in a range of fields. This multinational company based out of Canada has operations ranging from Australia to South Africa. With such a global company the willingness to travel and relocate would be required for any applicants. Applying for a processing engineering job as a consultant the company would expect a comprehensive understanding of engineering expecting an applicant to have a working knowledge of engineering and the ability to apply concepts to real world situations. Being such a scientifically oriented company the knowledge of how to use the latest computer programs will be an essential skill. Rhetorical Analysis The parts which I have decided to emphasize in my resume and cover letter were my first hand experiences and courses that have dealt with mineral processing. The skills and knowledge

which I have learned during my two summer internships are not very applicable to this position so I have chosen to move my work experience towards to bottom of my resume. I have then included my classes which I have taken for mineral processing, and in my cover letter I explain how these were electives not merely required to graduate so as to show my interest in the subject. I have also moved my computer skills up on my resume to show I have skills using todays modern technologies and the ability to apply those skills to real the real world. Within the cover letter I decided to talk about my first internship in Alabama to show my willingness to relocate and to highlight the experience which I had working in a coal processing plant.

924 East Bellaire Ave. State College, PA 16801 2/9/2012 Mrs. Melanie Headlee Pennsylvania Services Corporation 158 Portal Road Waynesburg, PA 15370 Dear Mrs. Headlee: During the summer of 2012 I was fortunate enough to work for Alpha Natural Resources as an engineering intern. Through my experiences for working at Alpha I have gained nothing but respect for the company and the way in which it operates. Upon examining your online job listings for openings I had stumbled over an underground coal engineer opening at the Cumberland Mine. I would be a beneficial asset to the Alpha team and would love a chance to start as an engineer. Through my education at Penn State I have gained a wealth of knowledge about mining engineering and would love to help Alpha continue to lead the country in coal production. While studying at school not only did I learn about the principles and theories behind mining engineering, but I have also gained hands on knowledge of engineering. During ventilation labs I was able to learn the proper technique for how to take ventilation readings using an altimeter. Skills also gained through my studies such as the ability to conduct mine feasibility studies and reserves estimations using Carlson also make me a good fit for the position. While working for Alpha this summer I was able to gain valuable underground experience. I logged over 50 days underground, including my prior internship I now have well over 100 days underground. This has given me a jump for understanding of the operations in the underground coal industry. Working with ventilation engineers this summer I was able to take air readings from the bleeders and longwall face, this has already given me an idea of what would be expected from for the position I am applying for. I have attached my resume which provides an overview of my underground experiences, and skills as an engineer. Thank you for the internship opportunity and I know that if you consider me for an engineering position I will not disappoint. Thank you, Sam Smith

Would you please consider me for the position of process engineer? With my degree in mining engineering, with addition to my classes mineral processing would qualify me as an excellent candidate for the position. Through my studies at Penn State I was able to take electives in mineral processing outside of the requirements for mining engineering. Classes like mineral processing 401 lead me to an in depth analysis of all mineral processing machines, giving me the skills to design specifications for a plethora of machines. For this position one must have experience in the design of fine particle dewatering, crushing, and grinding process operations something that my classes have directly taught me. Through my processing lab I was able to work directly will processing machines, using them to get materials to certain specifications required by the professor. While working in my first internship I moved to Oak Grove Alabama, the willingness to relocate is something that I have no issues with. I enjoy seeing new places and meeting new people. While working in Oak Grove I was given the opportunity to work at a coal preparation plant. While working at the prep plant I gained a working knowledge of all the processing machines and the flow sheet analysis of the plant. I have attached my resume which gives an overview of my work history, knowledge gained while attending school, and computer program skills. I feel that I have many of the qualifications needed for this position and would love to meet for an interview to discuss the job further. Thank you,
