_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Objective To assess the validity in PolyLactic Acid (PLA) derived polymer for use in bio absorbable

stenting. Additionally to test various body types on degradation rates including PH, Artery Size, and Flow Rates User Needs 1) Full Biocompatibility 2) Fully Degrade within 12 months 3) Maintain adequate structural stability for 6 months 4) Be geometrically formable and deployable as a stent Testing Setup and PLA Rings Results
PLA was formed into rings which were sampled daily, and measured for mass lost, to calculate the degradation rate.

PolyLactic Acid Polymer Based Stents

PLA degradation becomes evident after only one week in solution.

PLA was determined to follow Le Chateliers Principle for degradation. Results were inconclusive to the effects of PH, Artery Size, and Flow on degradation rates. Samples were determined to lose structural strength too quickly for use in stenting. Further testing is recommended to determine biocompatible polymers for use in copolymerizing to reduce the biodegradation rate. Contact Info: aschader@calpoly.edu, Austin Schader
