SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR CYCLING

BEFORE 1. Make sure that you are physically fit and healthy before you ride. Do not ride if you are under influence of alcohols or drugs. 2. Check that your bicycle is in good condition, the brakes, bells, lights, and properly inflated tyres. 3. Wear your cycling helmet and knee pads to protect your head and knees against injury if you fall. 4. Be visible. Wear bright clothing or wear the fluorescent jacket and always use light when cycling in the dark so that other road users can see you. 5. Wear proper attire for cycling. Make sure that you dont wear baggy trousers or dress to avoid your clothes getting stuck at the chain and you can fall off. The same goes to the shoelaces, make sure you tied it up properly. 6. You must not carry any passengers. 7. Do not carry loads on bicycle. Do not carry anything that can affect your balance or control of the cycle.

WHEN CYCLING 1. Follow all the road rules. 2. Make sure you cycle on the opposite way of other vehicles so that you can see them clearly. 3. Always give ways to pedestrians. Look out for pedestrians before moving off. 4. Always keep both feets on the pedals. 5. Slow down when approaching road openings, bends, junctions, bus stops and pedestrian crossings. Use hand signals to inform other users of your intention 6. Always check over your shoulder before changing direction. 7. Ensure that your bicycle carries headlamp showing white light to the front, and lamp or reflector showing red light to the rear during hours of darkness. Be seen at all time. 8. Gently ring the bell to warn other users of your presence and signal to indicate your intention when you overtake, only if safe to do so. 9. Always dismount and push your bicycle within any building structure and walkway.

AFTER CYCLING 1. Use U locks combined with flexible cables to lock up your bicycle. 2. Lock the bicycle to an immovable object. 3. About half of bicycle thefts occur from households, so make sure you lock up your bicycle when storing it at home. 4. Clean your bicycle from any dirt and make sure it is dry to avoid rusting.
