Demographics

Sikkim demographics implies the population of the State which is 406,457. The demographics of Sikkim is an account of the total number of people residing in Sikkim. Sikkim is among the least populated states of the Indian Union. The demographics in Sikkim boasts of having about 214,723 males and about 188,889 females. The density of population in Sikkim is about 76 persons per square kilometer. Moreover, statistics prove that the urban population in Sikkim is about 11% of the total population in Sikkim. In Sikkim, demographics is mostly composed of the people from different races and ethnic groups. Among the important ethnic groups of Sikkim that deserve a special mention in the demographics of Sikkim are: Chettris Limbu Rai Gurang Tamangs Thakurs Lepchas Nepali Bhutias, etc.

These ethnic groups of Sikkim have a distinct culture and socio-economic pattern; in fact, it is the socio-economic background that largely determines the plight of these ethnic groups in Sikkim. It is interesting to note that the demographics at Sikkim owes largely to the Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burmese and Tibeto-Mongoloid races. Moreover, people belonging to Hinduism and Buddhism are predominant in Sikkim. We also come across a small Christian population within Sikkim: these Christians are mostly Lepchas who have converted into Christianity during the British period in India.
