The Daily Monitoring Report


- Some eight government troops were killed; six during clashes between the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Al -Assad's forces in Homs's Al Qusayr district and two at the entrance of Deir Baraba neighborhood in the same governorate.(8) - Al-Assad's warplanes bombard the Aleppo towns of Andan, Haritan and Hayyan.(9)

The Field Situation


- Anti-Al-Assad demonstrations took place in the Homs districts of Al-Qosour, Gharb Al-Mashtal, Tal and Al-Saboniya. (1)

The Military Situation


- Colonel Malik Al-Kurdi, deputy commander of the FSA, refutes what reports by the Associated Press about Al-Assad's forces starting their withdrawal from most Syrian cities, pointing out that the government forces withdraw from some cities to storm other ones.(1)

The Political Mobility

- Al-Assad's forces set fire to 23 houses in the Idlib village of Taftanaz, launch a detention campaign, impose curfew and shoot any passer-by, amid reports of massacres that resulted in casualties (martyrs and wounded people) whose specific number is not confirmed. The forces also stormed Kafr Owaid in Ma'raat Al-Numan.(1)(2)(5)(8)(11) - Gunfire was reported at night in the Damascus neighborhoods of Kafr Sousa, Al-Qadam and Al-Hagar Al-Aswad. There are also reports about random detentions in Al-Salihya, crackdowns on Barzeh's houses and heavy gunfire in Al-Qaboun.(9) - Government forces raid Rankous by about 50 tanks amid continuation of military campaigns in AlZabadani, Madaya, Wadi Barada and Al-Ghouta AlSharqya.

- The Syrian National Council (SNC) declares the Idlib town of Taftanaz a disaster area due to the all-out military campaign launched by the regime's forces during which dozens of tanks and armored vehicles stormed the town. The city was also bombarded by helicopters, which resulted in huge number of deaths and the destruction of houses and entire neighborhoods.(1)(5)(8) - A mass grave of 35 unidentified bodies has been discovered in Hama.(1) - Landline and cellular communications have been cut off in Aleppo's northern countryside, coinciding with major troop movements.(9)

- During recent raids, Al-Assad's troops fully demolished more than 200 houses and partially destroyed 500 ones in the Hama town of Qalaat Al-Madiq.(1)

Political Stances Syria


- Al-Assads government issued its latest official death toll for the 12-month uprising. It told the United Nations that 6,044 people had been killed, of whom 2,566 were soldiers and policemen.(9)

- The British Foreign Secretary William Hague says, "There is no sign of Al-Assad troop withdrawal so far. Attacks on the citizens and the civilians have continued. The murder, oppression, and torture operations against the Syrian people by the regime have continued."(5)(7)

- The Syrian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jihad Maqdisi announces the arrival of a team of five UN peacekeepers in Damascus to discuss a common vision for the practical application of the steps that have been agreed upon, including the number of observers and their movements within Syria.(1)

- According to spokesman for the UN envoy Kofi Annan, Ahmad Fawzi, Robert Mood, head of Annan's mission arrives today in Damascus to discuss a plan on deploying about 250 UN monitors to oversee a ceasefire.(1)
