The Berlin Airlift started in July 1948 in response to Russia blocking food and supplies from reaching the western sectors of divided Berlin. Russia cut off access by land to the western parts of Berlin, located deep within East Germany, forcing the United States, Britain, and France to deliver aid to West Berlin solely by airlift to prevent economic collapse. For over a year, American and British planes flew in supplies on a continuous basis until Russia finally lifted the blockade in May 1949.
