CAST IRON

Cast Iron
Carbon contents 2 to 4 % C and 1 to 3 % Si.

WhiteCast Iron, 100 X Gray Cast Iron, 100 X Malleable Cast Iron, 100 X
Small addition of Mg, 0.1% Cast iron contain Si ( 1 to 3 %) and

high C

Ternary system of Fe-C-Si

Si is a strong graphitization
Process either free carbon precipitates in the iron or iron carbide decompose to iron (Fe) and graphite ( C )

Upon solidification process, iron-iron carbide system or iron-graphite system or both are formed

Malleable Cast Iron

White Cast Iron

Heat Treatment Malleablization First step, Graphite Nucleation. Heating to temperature stage and the early part of the holding temperature

Malleable Cast Iron

Second step, Holding in 870 to 954OC. Initial Graphitization.

Third step, slow cooling of the iron to the allotropic transformation. The cooling rate determines the phase of matrix. Ferrite Tempered Martensite
