Perkembangan teknologi telekomunikasi global turut meledakkan kesannya di Malaysia dengan fakta semasa mendapati penggunaan telefon bimbit

di negara ini melebihi 37 juta unit. Ini bermakna secara purata setiap rakyat Malaysia yang berjumlah 28 juta orang, mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya satu telefon bimbit manakala sebahagiannya lagi memiliki lebih satu malah mencecah enam unit pada satu-satu masa. Data itu diperoleh berdasarkan Kajian Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) yang mendapati pada 2010, sebanyak 33,250,177 telefon bimbit digunakan oleh rakyat di negara ini. Kajian SKMM itu mendapati peningkatan sekali ganda berbanding 2005 iaitu hanya 16,243,337 telefon bimbit atau meningkat 3.4 juta telefon bimbit pada setiap tahun.
