and daughter. Furthermore the various influences that shapes the developing child and the problems faced by working-class women in the United States around 1930s, during the Great Depression. The story explore the extent to which parents can be held responsible for her problems, and suggested that the community should also take some responsibility for forcing a young, single mothers in an impossible situation, and then bad mouthing her. For instant, Emilys mother who does not want to send her to a sanatorium, but the medical profession and social worker insisted it would be better for the child. In the end the men are wrong, but the mother does not have the gut and confident enough about the instinct to challenge them. Although the mother laments the past, she still seems to lack enthusiasm for Emily and activities and may only be maintained Emily poor social adjustment and low self-esteem. The mother may ignore Emily difficulties and hope that they are self-employed, but this is the attitude of defeat. Narrator has endured a life marked by problems and assumes that Emily will be able to withstand the same. A reward of a mother provides life different or better for a child, and the narrator seems to have a hope to win this even though the basic pleasures. Meanwhile from gender point of view, gender roles show that the father to provide financial support for families and mother to take care for the emotional needs of her family. Emilys mother who lost the support from the fathers, the person who responsible of their family had to balance the emotional needs of their children and improve family economic needs. The burden on single mothers is endless, whether they provide enough for their children or not, their existence is considered unfitting to raise a family. As a mother, she is accountable for her children's welfare, as well as their mistakes and experiences, the mother bear more burden than any other figure in the community. Its very sad but this is the truth presenting complications as a single mother with children who have difficulties in socio-economic pressures of time and how they should strive to become more than just apparel, could not do anything about it before the ironing board. Ironing, although it may a servile job and is certainly a tedious task, it is what Emilys mother role to make a living.
