Recent studies of the Jewish experience emphasize that the roles and responsibilities of women and men have often differed in major ways. Discovering Women in Jewish History will discuss some of those differences in the social, economic, and spiritual realms of Jewish life. Dr. Baskins talk will focus on what historical sources can teach us about specific women in the Roman Empire and pre-Islamic Iraq, medieval Egypt and Germany, and the United States in the early decades of the twentieth centuryand how this knowledge relates to the challenges facing Jews today. Lecture free. Dinner free for Sherith Israel members, $10 dinner donation for nonmembers. Reservations & information: Lisa Hoelle, 415.346.1720, x24 or lhoelle@sherithisrael.org
