Understanding your childs termly report

Your childs Termly Report provides useful information about attainment in the core curriculum. It should also form the basis of your discussion at Open Days or Open Evenings. It is important to understand what the numbers, grades and levels in this report mean. Please read this guidance carefully alongside your childs Progress Report. We do try our best to ensure the reports are as accurate as possible but if there are any problems or factual inaccuracies in your childs report please let us know. Home School Partnership Our latest feature on Termly reports is to provide you with useful information about the partnership between home and school. Reports detail matters to do with homework, PE kit, your attendance at Parent consultation meeting and whether the ABC fund is paid up to date. National Curriculum Levels Each level covers a wide range of knowledge, skills and attainment. Your child may be very close to the next level but may not have quite reached the required standard yet. Therefore for assessment purposes levels are subdivided into C, B or A with A being the highest to the next level. Levels are best fits and children may still be making progress, consolidating or refining skills even if their broad level stays the same. National Curriculum Level W

What this means Children are working at the level expected in the Foundation stage. Level 1 is the standard expected in Year 1

This level is expected of a typical seven year old at the end of Year 2.

Most children at the end of Year 3 or in Year 4 and 5 will either be working towards, C, B or A at this level. This is the expected level for a child at the end of Year 6.

Children working at level 5 have reached a higher level than would normally be expected of an eleven year old and is doing very well. This is a level of attainment expected well into secondary school. Nationally, less than 1% of children aged 11 would be working at this level.

Attainment in Year 1 You may notice that there are numbers ranging from 3 to 9 relating to the attainment on entry in different subject areas for children in Year 1. These numbers refer to the number of profile points children have attained at the beginning of Year 1. Where a child is yet to be working at the level of the National Curriculum, their attainment is recorded as W. Progress All children develop and learn at different rates; not all seven year olds are the same height or weight and so it is with their learning. At any one time your child is likely to show a higher level in some areas than others. To acquire any skill takes time and practise. This applies particularly to reading, spelling and writing. Homework is provided to reinforce and extend their learning opportunities. Please make sure that it is given quality time and completed to a high standard. Children who are helped at home to consolidate school work tend to do better overall. Most children who have the opportunity to talk about and show what they have learnt in school at home, are also able to consolidate their learning and tend to achieve their potential. There may be some dips and changes in your childs profile since the end of their last academic year. These arent necessarily things to worry about. Progress through the national curriculum is not simply about learning the next bit of knowledge- it also involves understanding concepts, applying learning, communicating thinking and solving problems. A typical child will move on by about one level every two years, reaching:Level 2 at age 7 Level 3 at age 9 Level 4 at age 11 Level 5 or 6 at age 14 Level 6 or 7 at age 16 The progress of all children is monitored and appropriate interventions strategies and programmes are used to support the learning of targeted children in small groups or on a 1-1 basis to help accelerate their progress. If you have concerns about your childs learning and progress use the open day session to discuss these with your childs class teacher. Teachers will explain how your child is performing in school but also offer useful techniques for you to use at home.

Attendance and Punctuality It is vitally important that childrens attendance and punctuality is excellent. Those children who miss school miss out on learning and knowledge. Every those whose attendance is good should rest on their laurels- every day counts. Missing school impacts on their ability to progress and develop. The number of sessions refers to morning and afternoon registration. Two sessions absent equates to one school day. Key Stage One Reading Levels Childrens reading levels are based on their ability to read graded books fluently and with understanding. Be aware that during Year 1 and 2 reading often clicks for children and they begin to make more rapid progress. Reading Level 16 22+ Expected by End of Year 1 End of Year 2

Progress on targets In your childs report there is also an indication of what progress your child is making on the targets in their books. As children meet old targets they are set new ones. We do not limit or cap their learning in any year group. The following codes are used: Y= Good progress being made P= Some progress being made N = No progress being made Reports also give children the opportunity to evaluate their learning and they provide you the chance to comment on progress and attainment throughout the term. We work very hard to provide you with accurate, timely information about your child and we do hope you find the reports a useful basis for your discussions with teachers on our Open Evenings and days.
