I am the president of the Shield Your Child campaign organization as well as an eighth grade teacher at a local middle school in which your station broadcasts to. The Shield Your Child organization is a group of parents and educators who seek to protect their children and students from the potential dangers of social media. One aspect of social media in which we focus on is music, which leads to the purpose of this letter: Our children and students listen to your station quite frequently during the day as well as the night. Several of the songs played contain disturbing sexual references (which after midnight becomes uncensored), and we are starting to believe that such lyrics are beginning to have an effect on the young society. The purpose of this letter is to express our concern of the music your station plays, and request that action is taken. After overhearing conversations held between our children and students on the day-to-day basis, we are noticing quite a lot of talk about sexual activity. We have conducted a little research, and it has come to our attention that the radio is in fact one of the sources adolescents receive sexual information (or as some say, guidelines) from. Our organization is not blaming your station for the increase of sexual activity that is going on with specifically our middle school students, or children of any age, but your playlists are surely not making things any better. According to Exposure to Degrading Versus Nondegrading Music Lyrics and Sexual Behavior Among Youth (a highly creditable source whose authors contain PhDs and MAs), degrading sexual music influences the sexual behavior of teenagers and adolescents. A study was conducted in survey form to 1461 adolescents comparing their daily usage of music and their sexual backgrounds. Before this study was conducted, studies already shown that music video consumption is linked to sexual behavior, so this study was to determine whether or not the actual lyrics of songs have a similar effect. The results showed that the youth who listened to music with degrading or hostile sexual lyrics were more likely to initiate intercourse and advance to higher levels of sexual activity, and that exposure to non-degrading content had no relation to sexual activity. We are very aware that we can not force you to change your playlist, and we appreciate the fact that Foxy 62 only plays censored and edited versions of songs throughout the day, but what about after midnight? Its not hard to assume that several teens are up listening to the radio (although they should be sleep), listening to the derogatory music being played and taking the lyrics to apply to their personal lives. So, I, along with the rest of the members of Shield Your Child, began a petition two months ago in hopes that your radio stations censors all songs at all times of the day and night. Again, this letter is not to place blame on your radio station, simply just to express concern and request action to the issue at hand.
