A CHANGE IN WORK

Naresh hails from channapatna, a small town, 35 kms. away from Bangalore. He did his M.Com, from Bangalore university in 1990, securing a first class. Before joining M.Com, he had completed one year diploma in business administration and got his DBA, again from the same university. Being in dire need of a job, Naresh joined the accounts department of a prestigious research orgenisation located in Bangalore. He found the job in the bigining exiting. Records keeping, personnel inventories, telephone, computers and pay packet at the end of the month made him feel great. The euphoria lasted for just one year. Slowly, Naresh discovered that it was routine every day and more of the same thing every month. To his dismay , Naresh discovered that he would not be allowed to climb up the ladder of the hierarchy as the orgenisation was essentially a research institute and where an M.Com, could not fit in any where except the accounts departement. Here too, levels above him were few and far between. Boredom and dispair set in. Naresh started day dreaming, reading, playing chess and solving cross word puzzles, but nothing could free him from the feelings of futility and helplessness. Naresh starte unburdening himself by pouring out his feelings before his boss and colleagues and even expressed his willingness to put in his papers. They advised him not to be crazy as the day were very hard, getting any job, as the present one, was almost impossible. Naresh had decided. slowly, he started looking for

alternatives. After several days of scouting around, ha managed to get a teaching assignement (temporary, but likely to be made permanent) in a junior college. Naresh jumped at this and did not let the apportunity slip. His parents felt dismayed, friends were angry and boss and colleagues were surprised.
